She attended Seminary at College Hill Cincinnati and Springfield, Ohio.
Before her marriage to Derrick, she taught country school at the Columbia School east of Middletown and had to get up at 3:00am in order to get from where she boarded to school. She had to wear men's boots to get through the drifts and across the fields. Later she moved into Franklin and taught school at the Old Central School on Center street (now Main Street) and lived with her Mother and two sisters.
She and Derrick were married at the northwest corner of Third and Center (now Main) streets on December 2, 1858 . She cooked her own wedding breakfast and later they journeyed to Cincinnati on their wedding trip to take a boat to Louisville.
They set up housekeeping on Center street (where Glen Whittle's tire shop used to be). She worked very hard. She kept two boarders (both men who worked in Derrick's blacksmith shop) and made all of the clothes, hats, mittens, underwear etc for them.
It was said of her "She belonged to the strong, grand, motherly type of woman and had a fine combination of loveable traits that won and kept for her many friends and much respect. She had the good fortune to look kind, and a big heart shone out unmistakably through her face."
She and Derrick celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on December 2, 1908. A big dinner was served to all the children and grandchildren.
She died as the result of a tragic accident while she was burning trash in her back yard.
She and Derrick are thought to have lived on Fifth Street in Franklin, Ohio.
