  • Narrative:

Derrick always said was "born at the wrong time of the moon" because things invariably went wrong for him.

Was twelve years old when his mother died.

He then lived awhile with his grandfather and grandmother Barkalow, and then with "Uncle Hosea" and "Aunt Mary" Barkalow. He often said that they were the best friends he ever had. They took care of his clothes, etc, while he was an apprentice.

He attended school in the back of the Methodist Church (later the home of Nettie McCarthy) and later attended the Farmers's College at College Hill Cincinnati.

At the age of 14 he was apprenticed to David Schenk, a blacksmith. He was a blacksmith all his life, but it was an unsuitable occupation as he was always a delicate man.

When a child, they said they'd never raise him [to adulthood] but he lived to be 79 and outlived the rest of his family.

He died from heart trouble and rhuematism in 1913.
